Desensitizing your Horse For a Western Saddle

First, remove the girth, rear flank, stirrups, etc. Once this has been done, brush off any loose dirt with a rag or soft brush.

Desensitizing your Horse For a Western Saddle In the beginning, a horse trainer needs to learn patience with your horse. Allow your horse to relax and you will know he is relaxed because the horse will lick and chew. We need to use all of our tools and skills to help a horse become comfortable with a western saddle on their back. I use the approach/retreat method to gain the trust and respect of the horse. Western Saddles are heavier than other saddles, so we have to start off easy. I take a new Saddle pad that has never been on another horse. I allow the horse to smell the saddle pad. Then, I rub the saddle pad around the horses back and sides if the horse starts to move away from the pad I retreat in the opposite direction. The horse will become used to the idea that the saddle pad will not hurt gaining the trust of the horse. Next, I get the pad on the back of the horse using the approach/retreat method un til the horse does not flinch with the saddle pad. I tossing the saddle pad up on the horses back until he is not startled any more with the saddle pad. I continue with the Saddle pad for several days and training episodes.
