Desensitizing your Horse For a Western Saddle Phase 2
Before you can put the saddle on a horse you have to get a the Horse used to the western saddle cinch. The western saddle cinch is there to keep the saddle on the horse while riding the horse on the trail. You need two ropes one for under the belly and one to lunge the horse. Use your lead rope or lunge line to simulate a girth cinch around the horse's belly. Rub the horse all over their belly and girth area with the rope. Use the approach and retreat method of introducing this to the horse and remember to reward the horse for appropriate behavior. If you have a long rope or lunge line(at least 22) and a 12 foot lead rope -- put the lunge line around the horses midsection and ask the horse to lunge with the rope around it's belly. Move the rope around while the horse is moving. Don't be afraid to let go of the rope if things aren't going like you had planned. You should move the horse until it is desensitizing and able to move "softly". By that I mean the horse should be relaxed. If the horse will let you know if he is relaxed by licking and chewing as the horse is asked to move forward with the lead rope. The rope under the belly needs to be in a position that is the horse begins to buck and crow hop you can release the rope from the belly. Let the horse relax and regain composure then try to put the rope on the horse again. Some horses learn to accept the rope in a few tries and others may take days to accept the cinch onder the belly.
