Put the Western Saddle on the Horses Back
This part of training your horse for a western saddle is the most challenging and dangerous. After gaining the confidence of your horse using the long lunge rope, start using the western saddle. I use put the saddle on the horse and take it off getting the horse used to the weight of the saddle. The western saddle will make noise when the horse walks so be ready for the horse to crow hop and want to get away from the saddle. Take the time to tighten the cinch under the belly and loosen the cinch. Tighten the cinch up loosely the horse may not like the cinch but it will get used to the cinch. Once the horse is used to the western saddle being cinched, it is time to put your weight on the saddle. Start with one stirrup at a time. Put your weight on the right side then the left side. Always as a rule of thumb, be very careful not to gouge the horse with your boots in the stirrup. This can startle the horse and ruin days of training. More to come later.
